title: Upload files
description: Add one or many files to a drive with the Upload button or by dragging them in, and the limits that can stop an upload.
---

You can upload files into the folder you have open, one file or many at once.

## Upload with the button

1. Open the folder you want the files in.
2. Click **Upload** in the toolbar, or press <kbd>d</kbd> then <kbd>u</kbd>.
3. Choose one or more files and confirm.

## Upload by dragging

Drag files from your computer onto the file area. The area shows "Drop to upload here". Let go to upload the files into the folder you have open.

## Follow the progress

Metis uploads the files one at a time. A bar above the files shows "Uploading" with the file name and a percentage. On some drive types the bar stays at the start and fills only when the file is done (see [Drive types](/guide/drive/drive-types)).

When the upload finishes, you see "Uploaded" with the file name, or "Uploaded 3 files" for several files, and the files appear in the folder.

:::note[If one file fails]
When a file in a batch fails, Metis stops there. The files after it are not uploaded. Reload the page to see which files arrived, then upload the rest again.
:::

## When an upload fails

The message tells you why. The common ones:

| Message | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| "Files over N MB cannot be transferred for this drive" | Some drives send files through your Metis server, which has a size limit for them. Your administrator sets that limit. The number in the message is that limit. |
| "Too many transfers are running. Wait for one to finish" | You have too many uploads or downloads running on these drives. Wait for one to finish, then try again. |
| "This link is invalid or has expired" | Metis could not accept the upload. Try again. If it keeps happening, tell your administrator. |
| "Upload failed" | Something else went wrong. The message may include more detail from the drive. |

If an upload to a WebDAV, FTP or SFTP drive fails, Metis removes the partial file. If a file with that name was already there, check it after the failure.

## Upload from All drives

At the top level of [All drives](/guide/drive/all-drives), Metis first asks which drive and folder the files should go to.
