title: Phishing warnings
description: Read the phishing check next to a message's subject and decide whether it is safe to act on.
---

Phishing emails pretend to come from someone you trust so you click a link, open a file or share something private. Metis Suite can check each message you open and warn you.

:::note
Phishing warnings only appear when phishing detection is turned on for your Metis Suite instance and your workspace, and the mailbox's owner has turned it on for that mailbox in your workspace. Your workspace admin and the mailbox owner control these settings. See [Workspaces](/guide/workspaces).

## Read the check

When the check is on, a round shield appears next to the message's subject. Point at it to open a card with the result.

| Result | What it says | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Safe** | **No action needed** | Read and reply as usual. |
| **Suspicious** | **Open links and attachments with caution** | Check the sender's address and where links go before you click. |
| **Phishing** | **Don't click links, reply, or share anything** | Do not act on the message. |

While the check runs, the card says "Analyzing for phishing…". If the check could not run, it says "Couldn't check this email" with the reason.

When the check is not confident about its result, the card adds "we're not certain". Under the result, a list explains the reasons for it.

## Who sees the result

The result belongs to the message. Everyone who can see the mailbox sees the same result.

## Tips

- Point at a link before you click it. The note at the bottom left of the message shows where the link really goes. See [Privacy and safety when reading](/guide/mail/privacy-and-safety).
- You can also ask the Mail AI panel "Is this email phishing?". See [AI help in mail](/guide/mail/ai-help).
- A **Safe** result is not a promise. If a message asks for a password, a payment or a code, check with the sender another way.
